Report:
Weather was very hot all weekend with little shade for the scouts and a very high pollen count making conditions challenging for scouts and leaders.
This year is one of the closest run competitions in memory, with every patrol doing exceptionally well and with many patrols within a few points of each other. “If you can believe, you can achieve” said assistant district commissioner for scouts, Jackie. There were 13 teams entered this year, with many teams composed of returning scouts from previous years. As such, the Turner Treasure was awarded to the patrol that had most improved which went to Indian Kings.
Not just the weather which was gorgeous. The standard of camping was yet again exceptionally high. The sites were smaller this year to accommodate all 13 teams, so each Patrol had to carefully consider how to lay out their site. Overall the tent pitching was equal to anything, one Patrol taking the trouble to re-pitch a tent on Saturday morning. Most teams shied away from complex menu items but their meals were wholesome and very tasty! Some competitors came up with some noteworthy devices to gain points, from novel gadgets to interesting themes. The sites were all kept clear and tidy throughout the weekend and the recycling rules strictly adhered to. The kitchen hygiene and food storage was much better than in previous years, apart from a little spilt milk (nothing to cry about) and some burst icepacks. Their behaviour was courteous and sensible and their enthusiasm for the challenges boundless, so that the differential in points was minimal right up to Flag-down.
There has to be a winner but all the teams are a credit to their Troop
and Leaders and also to Scouting in Market Harborough District.
